THE DAY WE MET...(Otherwise Known As: Why September 1st?)
By Paul Hughes

I met Sarah on Friday, September 1, 2000, at a poetry reading she was giving right next door to where I work. I went home and came back to see the reading and meet Sarah, whom the owner of the coffee shop said I would probably get along with.

We talked for a few hours and got along great, but around 11:30 PM the owner had to close her doors and lock her store. She sent us out on the street. Sarah and I decided to head out to a restaurant in another part of the city. I got a taste of her driving (a huge deal for me), we continued talking for hours on end, and got home at 4:00 AM that morning; nothing funny went on, we just talked.

I got her number and asked if it would be OK to give her a call. She said yes and I waited till Sunday night to call her and ask her to a restaurant on Wednesday of that week. I thought she was only interested in me as a friend, so I didn't consider it a date. I did bring her a single yellow/pink rose and ended up meeting her landlord as I came to the door.

We went on our "date" and have pretty much been together ever since! I ended up staying at her place a few times, and I had a toothbrush at her apartment about a month after we met. We eventually ended up deciding I should move in with her. We've been together ever since; this September 1st will be 3 years!!! Which will also be our marriage date.
